Essay Writing Guide

To start an essay, you need a clear idea of what is going on, what the essay is intended to do, and how you are going to approach it. This is something that can be taught, as it is a process which is very stratified. To start out, you need to be able to show that you understand the question – you can do this by either showing that you understand it, or making queries about it until you do. The next course of action is to make an outline, which will give you a place for when you need to write things down.

Once you know what the question is about, the next step is to think of your argument, and how you are going to approach it. In some cases, your approach is already given to you, and in others, you are allowed to decide your next step for yourself, but either way, you need to know what you are doing. Be sure that you can define it, as the introduction will ask you to do so. Knowing where you are starting from is the first vital step in being able to argue your points in the essay itself.

Once you know where your starting point is, then you can begin to formulate a thesis statement. A thesis statement is one or two sentences which accurately sum up your own argument within the essay as a whole. It appears twice in the essay, but the important appearance for the purposes of this article is the introduction, which allows everybody reading it to understand what you are doing, and where you are coming from. This is where everything starts from, and it will guide the rest of your essay, from your first research to your final arguments and more than that.

The thesis statement should be followed by the research which is necessary for anybody to truly be able to discuss whatever issue is at hand. You need to be able to pick out good arguments, so you should have a strong thesis statement which can handle such things. Every essay has three to five body paragraphs, so you need three to five separate arguments which you can use in your essay. The research done on these will allow you to fill your essay with proofs required for those arguments. This is how you start your essay – thoroughly and carefully.
